One of the biggest draws on TV this Christmas will be actress and comedian Miranda Hart who appears both as clumsy Chummy in a seasonal special of drama Call the Midwife on Christmas Day, as well as an extreme version of herself in the first of series three of her sitcom Miranda, screened on Boxing Day.
Her recently published, semi-autobiographical book, Is It Just Me – winner of the Non-Fiction Book of the Year in the National Book Awards – will surely be wrapped as a gift under many a festive tree, too.
On Monday tickets were released for a two-night run of her My, What I Call, Live Show at Plymouth Pavilions in March 2014 – yes, that's more than a year away. But she's such hot property that only a smattering of single seats remain unsold.
It would come as no surprise if she ends up doing a Michael McIntyre and slipping in another couple of dates either side as part of her first ever UK stand-up tour. Such is the popularity of this award-winning performer, whose slow-burn career really blossomed when her quirky and charming self-penned BBC Two show emerged two years ago.
Miranda, 40, was born in Torquay, but raised in Hampshire. She cites her comedy influences and heroes as Eric Morecambe, Tony Hancock, Joyce Grenfell and French and Saunders.
She actually started honing her comedy skills back in 1994 doing stand-up and sketch shows at the Edinburgh Festival, and then on the London circuit. This led to TV opportunities on the panel show circuit.
Before her own series was commissioned, she played Barbara in BBC One's Not Going Out with Lee Mack, and earned a British Comedy Award nomination for her role in sci-fi sitcom Hyperdrive, alongside Nick Frost. Miranda has also popped up in Nighty Night, Smack the Pony, Ab Fab, Vicar of Dibley and Jack Dee's Lead Balloon. Miranda Hart's Joke Shop was aired on BBC Radio 2 in 2008, sowing the seeds for her eponymous television show.
Miranda Hart appears at Plymouth Pavilions on Tuesday, March 4, and Wednesday, March 5, 2014. To check for remaining tickets call the box office on 0845 146 1460.
