Work on a £21 million road in Somerset could begin in March after the Government backed the project.

The mile-long road in Taunton, expected to be completed in late 2014, is intended to ease congestion in the area and help boost the local economy.

The Department for Transport approved Somerset County Council's move to buy up land along the route of the Northern Inner Distributor Road (NIDR).

Leader of the Council John Osman said: "I'm delighted this major infrastructure project is so close to becoming a reality. There is still a lot of hard work ahead but it does mean we will be able to unlock more of Taunton's potential as an economic centre for the region."

Somerset County Council Cabinet member, David Hall, said: "This decision provides a further massive boost for Taunton and the wider Somerset economy at a time when it's really needed."

Leader of Taunton Deane Borough Council, councillor John Williams, said: "The NIDR is so much more than a road scheme – it is absolutely vital to our ambitions to put Taunton at the forefront of the South West."
