Two people died in a collision on a notorious Westcountry road yesterday morning.

Emergency services were called to the A303 between the Ilminster roundabout and the South Petherton roundabout shortly after 8.30am.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said a car crossed the carriageway of the Ilminster bypass and collided with a van travelling in the opposite direction. "Unfortunately two people from one of the vehicles died at the scene," he said.

"There were two people in the second vehicle, with one person taken to Frenchay Hospital [in Bristol] with serious injuries and the second person receiving a minor injury."

He added: "Given the seriousness of the collision, a full investigation will be conducted to establish what happened."

The busy road between the A358 and A356 was closed for more than six hours while police investigators examined the scene. Although diversions were set up, there were long queues on nearby roads.

Police thanked motorists for their patience and asked anyone who witnessed the collision to call them on 101.

This was a particularly stupid piece of road construction. It should have been built as a dual carriageway, but instead was made a three lane road which claimed several lives from head on collisions soon after it opened. It was improved by controlling where people could overtake, but remains a very dangerous section of road. Dualling it should have been done years ago.
