Six fire crews tackled a large blaze at a thatched roof property in Totnes this morning.

Two crews from Totnes, two from Paignton and two from Dartmouth, along with the water carrier from Torquay, battled the blaze in Stancombe, Ashprington, for several hours.

Firefighters received the report of a fire, which occurred in the ground-floor kitchen of a detached converted barn, just after 8am.

The domestic property, measuring approximately 30 metres x 20 metres, was heavily smoke-logged.

Crews used four hose reel jets, one foam jet and a thermal imaging camera to tackle the blaze, which involved an oil appliance.

Two positive pressure ventilation fans were used to ventilate smoke from the property.

Once the fire was extinguished, crews carried out an extensive search of the thatch and roof space to check for any hotspots and ensure the property was safe.

Fire chiefs confirmed the fire was out by midday.

No injuries were reported.
