North Devon firefighters yesterday tackled a lorry fire on the Hatherleigh to Monkokehampton road.

They were called at 11.30am and engines from Hatherleigh and Okehampton attended.

Officers wearing breathing sets extinguished the fire, which caused severe damage to the engine compartment.

Meanwhile, fire crews were called to a blaze in a hotel kitchen involving a deep fat fryer.

Two engines and a hydraulic platform from Yeovil went to the fire, at Hendford, at 11.45am although the blaze, which had started in a fryer, was already out.
