A YOUNG man was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked by a group of thugs in a city nightclub.

The 21-year-old was in the ‘boudoir bar’ of Oceana at the Barbican Leisure Park sometime between 1am and 2am on Sunday February 9.

Police believe the assault may have begun with an innocuous and accidental nudge at the bar.

The victim, a university sports student was then set upon by a group of young men, numbering four or five, who knocked him to the ground before repeatedly kicking him.

The man suffered cuts and bruises to his head, face, eyes, and lower back.

A police spokesman said security staff intervened and carried the victim to a safe location where he finally came around, unable to remember much of the incident.

Police say the only description was that one of the attackers wore a white shirt and another wore a red shirt.

Investigators say there were a large number of people in the area of the bar at the time of the assault.

If you witnessed the incident or have information about the matter, call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 quoting crime reference number EC/14/1373.

It always strikes me as odd that a venue must have CCTV as a requirement of its licence. But the CCTV doesn't actually have to be good enough to recognise someone's face. Especially when you consider a 10 megapixel camera can be had for 30 quid! Equally strange is these venues check everyone's ID on entry (to check they are old enough) but don't join up the dots and actually record who is coming on to the premises.
