An investigation has been launched by police after the body of a woman was found in a burning car yesterday.

Officers were called to a field off the A358 in Ashill near Ilminster, Somerset, at 6.30am after passing drivers spotted the blazing car at the end of Thickthorn Lane.

Firefighters put out the fire, but then discovered the body of a woman inside.

The death was initially treated as unexplained but detectives have since confirmed that they are treating it as suspicious.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Crisp, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: "We are particularly interested to speak to anyone who may have seen a figure who was standing in a gateway immediately adjacent to the burning car.

"A report from a member of the public this morning led us here, where a red Ford Focus was on fire. We examined the car and found what we believe to be the remains of a woman.

"We are treating this as a suspicious death and our investigation team are particularly keen to speak to anyone who was in the area, at about 6am. It was quite a distinctive scene – there was smoke crossing the road."
