The body of a woman has been discovered on the coast of North Devon.

Police and coastguards were asked to help find a missing woman from Wilthsire after she was reported missing by police yesterday.

After local enquiries were made to her whereabouts emergency services began searching the Lee Abbey area near Lynton.

Two lifeboats, one from Lynton, were launched to help with the search.

Police say a woman's body, believed to be aged in her 60s, was discovered by coastguards on foot patrol near a cove near Lynton at 3.15pm yesterday.

The search and rescue helicopter from RMB Chivenor was called into action but didn't lift after the body was found.

A police spokesman this morning said: "Undertakers are now recovering the body and will be taking her to the lifeboat station for the time being."

"Unfortunately tide times prevented her being recovered earlier."

Police were unable to confirm when formal identification will be carried out.
