Down from £9.99 to £7.49 at Waitrose, this is a "modern" Spanish red from vineyards established only recently by Torres, the Catalonian winemaking company. From Torres' first venture in the Rioja region, this is made entirely from Tempranillo grapes, leaving out the Garnacha traditionally integral to the Rioja blend. With finely defined fruitiness that evokes redcurrants, it's also velvety smooth and creamy, and plump with mellow maturity. The name Ibericos, according to Torres, summons up the Iberian Peninsular, "a land of lonely oaks and ancient vineyards". Iberico is also the name of Spain's famous cured ham, from the pigs that graze among those lonely oaks. This wine would make a nifty match not just with Iberico, but with the Easter lamb too.
