Van crashes into bridge at Gunnislake and tumbles into river

A van driver escaped serious injury when his car careered off a road, crashed into a bridge and slid into the River Tamar.

Police closed the Newbridge crossing at Gunnislake, South East Cornwall, after the accident happened at around 9am this morning.

A force spokesman said the driver had suffered a suspected broken arm and had been taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for treatment.

The bridge remains closed awaiting a structural inspection to ensure it is safe. Diversions have been set up.
