Anti-wind turbine protesters hired a helicopter to show how high a proposed 328ft (100 metre) tall wind turbine would stand in their village.

Villagers living at Luscombe Cross, South Hams, Devon, put their hands in their pockets to show local district councillors who were on a site visit how high the intended structures would be.

Dozens of people watched as the helicopter hovered over the village yesterday morning.

Tresoc, the Totnes Renewable Energy Society, submitted a planning application in August to build the turbine.

A spokesman for the protester group said: "Many people assumed, just as I did, that these would be 100ft and not 328ft.

"To have something so large, so close to people's homes, is nothing but a disgrace."

However, Alix Riley, of Tresoc, said those in favour of the development outnumbered protesters by around three to one.

Ms Riley said: "We had planned to fly two balloons to show how high the turbine would be but it was simply too wet and windy which just goes to serve what a perfect spot it is to site the turbine."

Ms Riley said the turbine would be sited 550 metres away from the nearest house.

A decision on the plans will be made on January 16 at South Hams District Council.

TRESOC have been resisting a physical demonstration of the scale of this development for some time by flying kites and bumping a small balloon around the field at about 20 feet, even though encouraged to by the District Council, so well done to the residents for proving it can be done for less than a days subsidy for these machines. In reply to the representative of TRESOC yes you did outnumber the villagers but only two of your number were from the village, the rest I assume shareholders of TRESOC not exactly disinterested parties. Also the local turnout was hit by the publication on a local website that stated the meeting was not open to the public whilst forgetting to add protesters could attend but just wouldn't be spoken to by the council members as is the case with all site meetings. If you read the letters of support posted to the SHDC website they follow the lines of the suggested letter writing campaign posted on the TRESOC website. Unfortunately the writers generally copied what was in the suggestions word for word so easy to spot.

Very kind of the protesters to show us what 328ft looks like. And even kinder of the Herald to show us what a helicopter looks like. Patronising, much?

..'Tresoc said those in favour of the development outnumbered protesters by around three to one'.. Yeah, the thing will be a lot less quieter than a helicopter, and it'll be invisible at night anyway
