THREE drink drivers have been arrested in the city overnight as the police festive drink drive campaign cracksdown.

Officers took three motorists into custody after they failed roadside breath tests.

It comes as increased patrols target drivers who may be taking a risk after Christmas parties.

Sargeant Ryan Canning explained: "We have targeted patrols so if you are committing any seemingingly minor traffic offence like speeding, using a mobile phone, weaving around or just if we suspect you've had a drink we will require a specimen of breath.

"If you are caught drink driving it really is life changing. In most cases these days it means your job, and if your job pays your mortgage you're in trouble.

"And that's just the lighter end of the consequences - you could, of course, kill yourself or someone else."

Sgt Canning added that there is an increase in drink drivers and other issues over the festive period.

He said: "Generally there is an increase in footfall in the town centre.

"Maybe some people only go out once a year and they're not used to drinking. That can sometimes lead people to make bad choices."
