A leading independent councillor in Devon has been named county tree champion by the National Trust. Claire Wright, a district and county member in Ottery St Mary, has been handed the role as part of a pilot initiative by the Trust. Councillor Wright, who has campaigned against the felling of oaks in her ward, will help shape policy and alert the charity to any threats to ancient woodland. She said: "It feels as though our woodlands have never been more at risk from the threat of development and disease."
