It’s not quite the start Tom Daley and ITV were hoping for.

The second series of Splash! kicked off with its lowest-ever ratings.

The ITV programme, which is fronted by Tom, drew in an audience of 4.96m. That is lower than any rating during the show’s 2013 run, according to UK TV Ratings.

Last year’s launch episode managed to fetch 5.5m, despite being panned by critics and viewers.

It maintained strong viewing figures into its second week too, pulling in 5.16m.

The final was watched by 5.33m and was the most-watched TV programme that Saturday night and the competition’s second-highest ratings figure for that series after the launch.

Splash! 2014’s premiere saw the likes of actor Ricky Groves, dancer Perri Kiely, actress Gemma Merna, The Only Way is Essex’s Gemma Collins and presenter Michaela Strachan take to the diving board.

However, it was TOWIE star Collins who lost the splash-off against Strachan, and was sent packing.

Splash! returns for its second episode on Saturday.

Great caption Herald - best not to sub-contract the proof reading to 3 year olds though. And who's Tom "Daly"?

I do hope these ratings aren't connected to Tom's recent revelations about his private life and a undercurrent of homophobia. However, my considered opinion is that the poor ratings are because the programme is complete SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
