A couple from West Cornwall have been handed suspended jail terms after admitting housing benefit and council tax benefit fraud totalling £37,000. David and Hilary Winwood, of Bulwark Road, Helston, both failed to notify Cornwall Council of the fact that Mr Winwood was in receipt of a pension. They both pleaded guilty in February to two charges and were sentenced to 20 weeks custody, suspended for two years, at Truro Crown Court on Monday. In addition, they were ordered to pay £1,000 towards the council's investigation and legal costs. The overpaid benefits are being recovered separately from the court action.
