A stunning book which features dramatic images by three surf photographers from the South West is in the running at the 2014 British Sports Book Awards.

Incredible Waves – released last November by Newquay-based Orca Publications – has been shortlisted in the “Best Illustrated Book” category of the prestigious annual awards.

Surf photographers Mickey Smith, Roger Sharp and Lucia Griggi all began their careers shooting in the Westcountry and are now ranked among the best in Europe.

“As far as I know it’s the first time a surfing book has been shortlisted for the awards,” says publisher Chris Power, “so we’re absolutely thrilled.

“Big, dramatic ocean waves are the focus of the book so a lot of the credit has to go to the photographers who took the shots – Mickey, Roger and Lucia from the UK, and guys like Russell Ord, Clark Little, Tim McKenna and Chris Burkard from overseas.

“The book was designed in-house by David Alcock and Jamin Lean who also did a fantastic job.”

The 144-page hardback includes images from more than 50 world-renowned surf spots including Pipeline in Hawaii, Cloudbreak in Fiji, Skeleton Bay in Namibia and Apocalypse in West Java, Indonesia.

Around 30 leading surf photographers contributed to the project, submitting images of waves in every possible mood.

The 50 books shortlisted for the awards were announced earlier this week. The winners will be announced at a star-studded award ceremony dinner at Lord’s Cricket Ground on May 21.
