TV presenter Fern Britton has revealed that her decision to use spray tan on Strictly Come Dancing has resulted in her husband sleeping in the spare room.

The star, 55, who is married to TV chef Phil Vickery, said that the couple had their biggest fallout when she first used fake tan several years ago.

Fern, who appeared on the Strictly Christmas special in 2010 and is competing against stars including Victoria Pendleton, Louis Smith, Kimberley Walsh and Denise Van Outen on the new series of the BBC1 show, told the Radio Times that she had now insisted on going bronze despite Vickery hating the smell.

"The biggest row my husband Phil and I had was when I first put fake tan on. Being a chef he is very sensitive to smells and he can't stand it," she said.

"I have convinced him it's an essential part of the Strictly experience and he will be sleeping in the spare room on spray-tan days."

The former This Morning presenter, whose broadcasting career started in the Westcountry, said she had embraced Strictly's glamorous wardrobe, and not just the spray tan.

"Whenever anyone is worried they are going over the top with the costumes, hair, make-up or glitter, the line is – 'Of course not, this is Strictly!'.

"I won't be going too skimpy to start with, but I could be worn down to a size zero after a week, in which case the costumes might get shorter," the TV host, who shed weight after having a gastric band fitted, added.

Fern said of competing on the BBC1 show: "I have wanted to do it for a long time but something has always come up. So this year I cleared my diary for the whole of autumn in the hope I would get the call again!"

Her professional dance partner, Artem Chigvintsev, told the magazine: "She is smart and intelligent so the key is to use that and have clever concepts and ideas behind every dance."
