Residents in the South Hams will soon be able to have extra rubbish taken away by bin men – for a fee.
Until now, any extra bags that would not fit in wheelie bins were left uncollected, but South Hams District Council announced today that residents would be able to purchase stickers to attach to bin bags that would ensure they got taken away.
The measures were agreed by the council’s executive today and recommended for full council approval.
Besides the “nominal fee” for household rubbish, householders will also be able pay an annual fee for additional garden waste bins.
Council leader John Tucker said: “We are seeking to extend and improve the existing service for those people who wish to purchase additional waste disposal.
“The idea is that in charging, such as for the misuse of clear or blue recycling bags to dispose of black bag waste, we will be helping to make the service more cost effective for the council tax payer.”
The council also announced it would be requiring developers to provide bins for new properties.
