Winter Olympics hopefuls are taking to the ice in Truro this week as the city's Christmas skating extravaganza gets under way.

Set up by gold medallist and Dancing On Ice star Robin Cousins, the 25-metre rink is situated in the grounds of Truro Cathedral. Thousands of skaters are expected to take advantage of the attraction between now and January 6.

Robin, who has been Olympic, World, European and British champion, said he was delighted by the enthusiasm already shown by Cornish people to the event.

"We're excited to have created a rink in the grounds of the cathedral for the season," he said. "Truro is a beautiful city and I think it will provide tremendous fun for people of all ages to enjoy."

Skating sessions are available hourly throughout the day but due to its expected popularity organisers are advising people to book in advance to guarantee a place. Times are extended on Wednesdays to coincide with late night shopping in the city.

And for those who would rather watch the pirouettes, twirls and inevitable tumbles rather than participate, refreshments are available at the Cathedral Restaurant, which overlooks the rink.

What a spectacular setting to re-create the Victorian ice fairs, that would have been a crowd pleaser I'm sure.
