Police across the west of Somerset have been out in force as part of a drive to arrest suspected criminals.

In total 54 arrests were made across West Somerset, with 27 people arrested in Taunton, seven in West Somerset and 20 in Sedgemoor.

The arrests came as part of one of the biggest ever operations this year across the force area under the Relentless banner, which aims to reinforce high-impact policing.

Chief Superintendent Daimon Tilley said: "Large numbers of police officers and police staff have been mobilised across the district, taking part in our force-wide Relentless day of action.

"Officers have been involved in early morning raids all across the area, targeting criminals who cause harm within our communities."

Around 1,000 police officers, special constables, police community support officers and police staff were involved in the day of action across the force area.

The enforcement action follows on from a campaign to tackle criminals involved in motor crime, burglary and robbery. Over the past two months police have arrested more than 1,070 suspects.
