Pressing day for lovers of cider and apple juice

A restored Victorian machine was pressed into action at the weekend as the National Trust celebrated the cider harvest.

Cotehele, in the Tamar Valley, near Saltash, played host to an apple-themed weekend, marking a tradition in the area that dates back hundreds of years.

Its own orchard was first established more than 300 years ago and is home to a diverse range of local varieties from the juicy Pig Snout to the sweet Lady's Fingers. The estate's new "Mother Orchard" was planted in 2007.

Visitors were treated to apple and juice tastings while a children's apple-themed trail and a cookery demonstration were also laid on.

The Cornwall Beekeepers' Association was out in force while the Tamar Dowsers were on hand to give talks.

Apple crushers and presses were on sale and the highlight of the weekend was putting a restored Victorian cider press to work, making traditional cider. The gardening team at the historic house took visitors through the process, building the "cheese" before the big squeeze on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
