In Polperro, Cornwall, flood defences installed at the turn of the millennium largely did their job. The picture- postcard village was hit by two floods in 1976 and 1993 when the River Pol overflowed, to devastating effect. Edwina Hannaford, Cornwall councillor for the area, said only about four properties had experienced problems this time. "It is fair to say the flooding wasn't as bad as it could have been. I think the flood defence did its job," she said.
