Police yesterday warned members of the public of the potential dangers posed by a Taser cartridge that was lost by a patrol officer.

The force revealed that the cartridge was mislaid by an officer while on patrol during a shift in East Devon on Tuesday night.

Devon and Cornwall Police said there had been no previous reported incidents in the force area of a Taser cartridge being discharged without being attached to the unit which supplies the electrical charge.

"The cartridge contains probes on wires which extend when the device is discharged," a spokesman said yesterday.

"The probes could be inadvertently discharged by a build-up of static if picked up or handled.

"Although the potential danger to the public is very low police advise that if found the cartridge should not be tampered with and handed in to the police."

The cartridge is black and measures 50mm (2ins) by 37mm (1.5ins) and has the serial number C31017NX4.

Anyone who finds the missing cartridge is asked to contact the police on 101 or hand it in at their nearest police station.
