Police say they are still investigating alleged fraudulent activity at one of the South West region's biggest schools.

Detectives with Devon and Cornwall Police officers have been looking for evidence of whether there have been any salary irregularities at West Exe Technology College in Exeter since July.

A letter from Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer, to Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw, confirmed that officers were investigating whether any fraud had been committed at the school while it was under the leadership of former executive head Steve Maddern and former chair of governors Paul Smith.

Devon County Council officials informed police after issues were raised in an internal audit report it conducted into the financial management of the school under Mr Maddern's and Mr Smith's control.

A spokesperson for Devon ad Cornwall Police has now confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.

The police inquiry followed a report which uncovered years of alleged financial mismanagement under the leadership of Mr Maddern.

The report criticised the close relationship between the headteacher and Mr Smith.

Police investigations are working with Devon County Council auditors and the Crown Prosecution Service.
