A man has been arrested in connection with the suspected murder of Devonport man Michael Brincat.

The body of Mr Brincat, aged 76, known to locals as 'Maltese Mike', was discovered inside his Devonport flat last Wednesday.

Police were initially treating his death as unexplained but as a post mortem began, the inquiry soon changed to 'suspicious'.

A forensic post-mortem investigation took place, and police have now launched a murder investigation.

Mr Brincat, was found lying on the floor in his Marlborough House flat in Granby Way just after midday on Wednesday, February 6.

Detectives from the major crime investigation team say they have made a number of enquiries over the last few days.

Early this morning at around 7am a 52-year-old man from the Devonport area was arrested on suspicion of murder.

He is now in police custody where he is being interviewed by detectives.

Detective Superintendent Paul Burgan leading the investigation said: “While this is a significant development in the investigation I want to be clear that there are still a number of lines of enquiry to be completed and this investigation is very much ongoing.

“I would still like to appeal to local people to come forward if they have any information, no matter how insignificant they think it might be.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and quote reference ED/13/718, alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
