The Cornish Pirates will play seven of their home fixtures on a Friday night this season in an attempt to broaden their support base.

Excluding friendlies, their Greene King IPA Championship stage one league games and British and Irish Cup matches will be played with a mix of seven Friday fixtures, five on a Sunday and one Saturday evening fixture during the 2013-14 season.

Their local derby with Plymouth Albion at Mennaye Field will take place on Boxing Day, which is also a Friday.

No fixtures have been scheduled for Saturday afternoons, with the club mindful of other clubs in county, such as Redruth and the Cornish All Blacks in National League Two South, playing their games.

Pirates CEO Josh Lewsey said: "After thorough and extensive deliberation the club can now announce the fixture list for the forthcoming season, and as mentioned previously we will play the majority of our home games on either Friday nights or, as has been the case in recent years, Sunday afternoons.

"We are conscious and respectful that any change has the ability to cause initial dissatisfaction with some existing fans.

"However, I'm hoping that those members also understand the club's need to increase and diversify our support base.

"With that in mind, and considering the many factors – especially from a performance and supporter experience perspective – we have decided to follow this route.

"I, alongside Ian Davies (head coach) and Steve Davies (head of sales, marketing and communications), will be present at the 'Meet the Players' event on the 9th August to answer any questions in regards to this matter."
