Passenger injured as car drives into shop

A car containing an elderly couple struck a kerb and mounted the pavement before hitting a telegraph pole and crashing into a Devon shop. The couple were taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital yesterday after their blue Vauxhall Corsa veered into Stoneman Television, in Church Street, Witheridge, near Tiverton, at about 5pm. Firefighters cut the roof from the vehicle, which was a write-off, to free the trapped occupants. A police spokesman said the female driver was unhurt but the male passenger had suffered chest pains and bruising.
