If you are a parent carer of a child or young person withadditional needs then here's a date for your diary. On Wednesday, 24th October Parent CarersVoice will be hosting a free Makaton and Challenging Behaviour workshop from10.00 until 2.45 pm at the Barnstaple Hotel in Barnstaple.
Thisevent is free to parent carers of children and young people aged 0 to 25 withadditional needs and we pay for most childcare and travel costs. Makaton is a language programme which usessigns and symbols to help people communicate and it is designed to supportspoken language. As almost everything wedo relies on our ability to communicate parent carers decided that a Makaton workshopwould prove very useful and Penny Bacon, who is a teacher at Pathfield schooland a qualified makaton teacher, has kindly offered to lead the morningworkshop.
Afree lunch will then follow prior to the start of the afternoon workshop whichis designed to address the need for more information and help on managing, andunderstanding, Challenging Behaviour. SallyBarber, who is a Community Psychiatric Nurse specialising in ADHD and HelenVerral, who is an Occupational Therapist who specialises in sensoryintegration, have kindly volunteered to run this workshop and they plan to cover a wide rangeof topics including different types of challenging behaviour, why it mighthappen or reoccur, changes we can make, preventative plans etc.
The whole day is flexible and parent carers are welcome toattend for the morning session, the afternoon session or for the whole day.
