A BEACH clean at Westward Ho! has led to 15 bags of rubbish being filled with a total of 200 items of litter being collected in total.

The event was organised by Marine Conservation Society (MCS) volunteers and was led by Sallie Mckay Roper, the Community Champion from Tesco Bideford.

A group of 15 volunteers met at Westward Ho! beach earlier this month and managed to gather 200 items in a 100 metre stretch of the beach.

The total amount of rubbished collected weighed 37kg.

Sallie said: “These beach cleans are vital. Beach litter isn’t just unsightly, it can also be very dangerous to both humans and wildlife.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to Councillor Jane Whittaker, Councillor Jim Jackson, Councillor Ken Davis and all the volunteers who turned up on the day.

“Also a huge thank you to Torridge District Council for lending and sorting out the litter picking equipment.”
