Weather warnings for further rain and possible flooding in the Westcountry remain in place until the weekend.

The blustery, heavy showers which brought up to an inch of rain in some parts of Devon and Cornwall are expected to continue today.

The Met Office said heavy rain would sweep across the region this morning although conditions should ease into the afternoon.

It said the weather would remain "mild but very unsettled" with "gales and further rain" on Friday.

The Met Office has forecast brighter but colder weather over the weekend but still with "brisk winds and showers".

The soggy Christmas comes towards the end of what is expected to be one of the wettest years in Britain since records began.

The UK's average rainfall in 2012, excluding December, is 1,202mm – placing it 13th in the list of wettest years since records began in 1910.
