It was a performance few will forget in a hurry.
In front of a full house, Wind in the Willows favourite Mr Toad helped Steve Bartin pop the question to his girlfriend Dawn Bradley.
Steve, a bathroom installer from Tiverton, chose a performance of the celebrated play at The Brewhouse Theatre, in Taunton, to go down on one knee.
Dawn Bradley is a nurse from Sampford Peverell and works as a children's community nurse at Taunton's Musgrove Park Hospital.
Steve had contacted The Brewhouse some weeks before as Dawn's nickname for him is "Tivvy Toad" so the venue's Christmas show seemed the ideal opportunity for a surprise.
He booked two tickets for the show but needed the help of the professional cast to pop the question.
Fred Broom who plays Toad in the production and Matt Bannister, alias Ratty, stepped forward. At the end of the show, Fred declared he was in love and summoned Dawn onto the stage and asked her to marry him, at which point Matt was on hand to make clear that she had the wrong Toad.
Steve appeared on stage and slipped a solitaire ring on Dawn's finger after she agreed to be his wife. The couple will marry in July 2014.
The Wind In The Willows runs at The Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton until January 5. For tickets call 01823 283244 or visit www.thebrewhouse.net
