A young motorcyclist was left fighting for his life in hospital after a crash with a tanker.

Adam Smart was riding his bike yesterday morning when he collided with the heavy goods vehicle on the Carkeel roundabout at Saltash, near the Tamar bridge crossing to Plymouth.

The 20-year-old sustained what police described as "potentially fatal injuries" in the smash, which happened around 7.45am on the A38, and he was rushed to Derriford Hospital.

His family released a statement saying they were "with him" at his bedside and asked for privacy "at this traumatic time".

The A38 was closed on the Liskeard side, as was one lane of the Saltash Tunnel, the route remaining closed until 2pm.

Traffic queued all the way from Saltash along the A38 through Plymouth – with journey times of up to 90 minutes.

A police spokesman said: "Adam has sustained serious injuries and is being treated at Derriford Hospital for what are described as potentially fatal injuries."
