The funeral of a "warm-hearted and caring" mother who drowned off the Cornish coast while trying to save her sons has taken place.

Alison Tooby, a school helper, was swept out to sea as she attempted to swim out to bring her two sons aged 11 and 13 to safety on September 3.

The boys had been bodyboarding at Northcott Mouth, near Bude, when they got into difficulties.

Their mother waded into the water to help but was dragged away by a rip current. Ms Tooby, aged in her 50s, was visiting Bude from her home near Wellington, Somerset.

One of the boys managed to swim ashore, while the other was rescued by an RNLI lifeboat crew. The private funeral and burial took place on Saturday followed by a celebration of Ms Tooby's life at Langford Budville village hall, Wellington.

Mike Mcguffie, Ms Tooby's partner said: "It was a tragic accident that happened as she was trying to help the boys, who, thank goodness, are alright."
