A MAN is in intensive care after his car plunged down an embankment close to a railway line after colliding with another vehicle.

The accident happened just after 3pm on Sunday on the A377 at King's Nympton, close to the Tarka Line.

The driver, named locally as Chawleigh resident Ron Johnson, 74, was rushed to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital. His passenger, Phyllis Maunder, 84, had recently moved to Chawleigh from Tiverton. It is thought she escaped with cuts and bruises.

The second vehicle was left badly damaged on the road.

Mr Johnson was flown to hospital by air ambulance and three further casualties were treated by ambulance crews.

The train line between Barnstaple and Exeter St David's was closed for an investigation, causing disruption to some services.

Trains were later allow to pass the scene at five miles per hour.
