Crowds of shoppers and staff were evacuated from Plymouth's Drake Circus shopping centre yesterday following a bomb scare.

Police said a suspicious package was discovered at BB's in the busy complex at around 10am.

Shop staff and customers were immediately evacuated to safe areas at the nearby Methodist Church and Bretonside bus station.

Officers put a 50-metre cordon around the area while firefighters stood by.

Bomb disposal experts were drafted in to examine the package and found it was not dangerous. By 12.30pm the centre was reopened to the public.
