A kayaker was taken to hospital with a head injury after his boat capsized in high winds off the Westcountry coast.

The man, in his 50s, was rescued by a lifeboat in Cawsand Bay, in Plymouth Sound, today.

A friend called 999 around 1.30pm reporting that the man, who is local to the area, could not get back into his boat.

The man was recovered to a Plymouth Sailing School boat then later taken to Derriford hospital.

A spokesman for Brixham Coastguard said: “He was wearing a dry suit and a buoyancy aid so he was doing all the right things.”

A shipping forecast on Saturday warned off gales, rising to force eight at times.
