JOHN SHERIDAN has ruled out the chances of signing a new striker before Plymouth Argyle’s game against Cheltenham Town at Home Park on Saturday.

However, the Pilgrims’ boss has revealed he is in advanced talks about a potential new recruit.

Sheridan would not reveal either the club he was talking to, or the player he wanted to sign, but confirmed it would be on a loan deal until the end of the season.

He has already taken Jason Banton and Matt Parsons on permanent transfers from Crystal Palace this month.

Sheridan said: “I’m talking to a club at the moment regarding a striker. I’m pushing and pushing it to try to get him in, but he’s not my player.

“If that doesn’t happen, but I’m hoping it will, I will look elsewhere because I do believe we need another body in that area.”

Sheridan added that he thought Argyle needed ‘a bit of a target man’ but would not comment any further.

“He’s not my player, so I think it’s unfair if I name him,” said Sheridan. “Obviously, as soon as he comes, everyone will know who it is.”

Iwelumo is available on a free and I think he would be a great addition. Different to what we have already, a targetman and a threat from set pieces.

@Trots I like your enthusiasm and yes I agree that a proven goalscorer would give us the boost to push for the playof*** ,but the point is JS has stated that there will be no deal in place before Saturdays game,so why not give Tyler a run out ? As for Lavery when he first arrived at the club the usual suspects were questioning the judgement of JS for bringing in another UNTRIED youngster, now as we all know he is a bit special, but who"s to say that Wednesday would have played him against Leeds if JS hadn't taken the gamble and who knows he may even had been available on a free come the end of the season as another promising youngster who failed to make the grade ,because HE WASN'T GIVEN THE CHANCE.

George, there is no way I am writing Tyler Harvey off, not one bit. My point was that at this time we need a proven goal scorer and yes Tyler might be that man but can we risk it at this really important time of the season when we could push on towards the top seven. We have, remarkably got ourselves in a rather good position and I for one wouldn't want to blow that by placing it all on the young shoulders of Tyler. In another set of circumstances then yes Tyler should be given that opportunity but personally I don't this is the right time to do that. That's nothing against the lad and certainly I am not suggesting he's not good enough, it's the timing that's not quite right. When Lavery was with us there weren't to many shouting from the roof tops about young Tyler then was there??

I see the WISE MAN from the east (our wilfy) continues to spout his hearsay comments from his armchair,if Tyler was selected (as it would appear that there will be no new face in the starting line up v Cheltenham) he could just surprise a lot of folk who follow the pilgrims from their armchair or indeed the snug at the Golden Hind by doing just what Lavery did ,after all no one realized what a talent he was untill JS gave him his first league start as did Luggy with Mason and both did not have a proven goalscoring record at this level ,So give the lad a chance and if you really want to be seen as a true supporter of Argyle you will encourage and support the lad not write him of at every opportunity.

At this moment we need a striker who has a proven record of scoring goals, Lavery was that person but unfortunately he's gone back and unlikely to return. Tyler maybe good enough and yes he deserves a chance but we are at the stage of the season where we can't take a chance that he's good enough. It's make or break for the play offs during the next 6-8 games so I don't think we can risk Tyler being able to carry on where Lavery left off. Harsh maybe but Tyler has time on his side and hopefully this time next season he'll be the man.
