A rape investigation has been launched in Exeter after a woman was attacked in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police say the incident occurred between 1am and 2am in a lane that joins Sidwell Street and King William Street, near to St Sidwell's Church.

Although officers have refused to give out any further details of the attack, they have appealed for witnesses who saw or heard anything unusual at around that time to come forward.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said officers would be conducting a thorough search of the scene.

"This is the early stages of the investigation and there is very little information we can share at this stage," he said.

"Right now detectives will be gathering all the details they can, which will include carrying out interviews and forensic analysis.

"I would like to ask for the public's help though, for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the vicinity of this incident in the early hours of Tuesday, no matter how small it might seem to them, to contact us without delay."

The scene of the attack yesterday remained cordoned off.
