An inquest into the deaths – and suspected murders – of a ten-year-old Newquay boy and his mother could shed new light on an unsolved case next month.

Ben and Patricia Philpotts, 44, both perished in a blaze at their bungalow in Trevarrian in January 2010.

It was later discovered that Ben had been bludgeoned on the back of the head before the fire began.

Ben's father and Patricia's estranged husband Harry, 47, was the main suspect in the case but died later from severe burns.

The inquest, due to take place over three days from November 14, will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of all three family members.

A serious case review into the incident, released after a Freedom of Information request in January this year, revealed Mr Philpotts had mental health issues and had not been managing his "delusional and paranoid symptoms".

It confirmed Ben had died from a deliberate blow to his head and the effects of smoke inhalation.

The review stated that the relevant authorities believed Mr Philpotts was responsible for Ben's injuries and the fire.
