Ilfracombe’s long-derelict bus station is on its way to becoming a car park, following the town council’s approval of contracts for the site’s demolition worth more than £50,000.
Last month Ilfracombe town council secured the station, which has been an abandoned eyesore for more than ten years, announcing it would serve as a car park until a longer-term use had been agreed.
At a council meeting on Monday councillors approved giving a £27,981 contract to LA Moore to remove asbestos and other work which Councillor Paul Crabb said amounted to “removing all the nastiness.”
A further £24,850 will be given to Notts to remove other waste and a third, smaller contract for resurfacing work will be awarded in January 2014.
Work is expected to start in January 2014 and the car park is scheduled to open in early April.
