A hit-and-run driver left a ten-year-old boy lying on a Devon road with a shattered ankle.

Emergency services were called to the market town of Holsworthy in the north west of the county.

The child suffered a serious ankle injury and was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth by land ambulance.

Police are now hunting the driver of a medium-sized silver car following the incident outside Specsavers on Bodmin Street in the town at 5.10pm on Thursday.

Officers with Devon and Cornwall Police sealed off the road to allow paramedics and other response vehicles to reach the stricken boy.

The road remained closed for some time while officers carried out an investigation at the scene.

A police spokesman said: "The driver left the scene and failed to stop after the collision.

"The boy sustained a serious ankle injury, a possible fracture.

"His injuries are not thought to be life-changing."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police on its new 101 number.
