High diving hopeful Jenny Eclair has admitted she has a fear of heights, ahead of her appearance on ITV’s Splash! tonight.
The comedienne – taking part of today's heat of the show – said she had even suffered a panic attack from merely taking a spin on a big wheel, and had to be helped off.
She said: “I am nervous because heights give me the willies and even the three metre board feels dizzyingly dangerous. I’ve only got one neck so I really don’t want to break it.”
Eclair went on: “I’m scared of heights. The reason I’m scared of going high is because I tried to go on the Belfast Eye and I had a panic attack.
“I went into the foetal position, pressed the panic button and I was seen off The Eye."
Explaining her motivation for taking part in the show, which will see her donning her bathers and performing a live dive from a high platform, she said: “I am doing Splash! because appearing on national telly in a swimming costume will give solace to thousands of other 50 plus women who have accidentally let themselves go and have decided not to really care.
“I am hideously out of shape. I’ve just finished a tour recently where I drank wine and ate crisps.”
She is up against former rugby union player Austin Healey, singer Una Foden from The Saturdays, TV presenter Pollyanna Woodward and Paralympic athlete Richard Whitehead, all of whom have been mentored by Tom Daley.
They are taking part in the fourth heat of the show which is on ITV at 6.45pm today, hoping to win a place in the semi-finals which begin next week.
