Sisters Abbie and Becky Herron are carrying on the family tradition of a life in the Royal Navy – and quite fittingly serving side by side on board HMS Heron.

The pair, based at RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset are the third generation of Herrons to sign up to the service.

Abbie, 28, joined in 2004 and now works as an air stations photographer.

Her 24-year-old sister Becky followed in her footsteps in 2006 and works in human resources.

The siblings have enjoyed a variety of deployments during their careers so far.

Becky, who has also served on board HMS Illustrious and recently completed a tour of Afghanistan, said: "I have had a fantastic career so far with lots of opportunities to be part of what I grew up with.

"I absolutely love working here with Abbie. It is the first time in both our careers that we have worked in the same place.

"It's so nice being close to each other as we are very close as sisters."

Abbie has been deployed on operations in Libya and in the Middle East.

She said: "The sense of belonging in the Royal Navy is like no other. Being in the Navy has given me great experiences and opportunities.

"Becky and I had hoped to be posted together for some years. Here at RNAS Yeovilton not only gives me a varied and happy posting but with the added bonus of sharing it with my sister."

Their grandfather Norman Herron served in both the Merchant and Royal Navy. And their father Mick Herron, 56, spent his service in the Royal Marines.

Mr Herron said he was delighted his daughters had chosen to follow a Navy career.

He said: "I am very proud, happy and privileged, not only to have two beautiful, sensible daughters, but that they had the insight to join the Navy and carry on the family tradition."
