An investigation has been launched after a firefighter was reportedly run-over by his own fire engine during a carnival.

Retained firefighter Justin Matthews is thought to have suffered a broken leg while taking part in the Torrington's annual carnival on Saturday evening.

It is understood Mr Matthews, who is also a pub landlord, was walking in front of the fire engine when he got caught up in the wheel.

The carnival was stopped while ambulances treated him at the scene in the town centre before he was taken to North Devon District Hospital.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a full investigation will take place into the incident.

Graham Rook, station manager, said: "We had an accident and it was a firefighter from Torrington. Somehow or another he got caught up with the front wheel of the appliance in the carnival.

"He was taken to hospital and came back again last night. I have now got to do a full investigation."

Ellen Vernon, of North Devon District Council, posted on Twitter: "Accident at Torrington Carnival fire engine has run over one of the firemen – looks like broken leg."
