Fertility specialists are appealing for more sperm and egg donors to give "the gift of life".

The South West Centre for Reproductive Medicine, based at Plymouth's Derriford Hospital, is looking for donors to help patients seeking infertility treatment.

One in seven couples seek medical help at some stage in their lives for help to achieve a pregnancy.

Senior embryologist Dr Sally Doidge said: "For our patients, a successful outcome is nothing short of a 'little miracle'.

"For some, treatment with sperm or eggs donated by others is their only hope. They often tell us that it makes their dreams come true. But we can only do that through the generosity and kindness of others.

"A donation of eggs or sperm to help someone have a child is one of the most generous gifts anyone can give."

The centre launched its own donor sperm bank and donation programme to help patients in the Westcountry in 2008.

Dr Doidge said: "We were aiming to make the treatment more affordable and accessible for people in this region. We have done that and seen 33 pregnancies from sperm donation alone."

Women aged 18-35 and men aged 18-44 who are generally fit and healthy can offer to donate. For details, call the centre on 01752 763704.
