W H Lane & Son of Penzance are holding a sale which they have called A Summer Special Art Auction on Thursday.

It is of affordable pictures and prints with estimates from as little as £5 to an upper estimate of £1,500. Most of the 550-plus lots are being sold without reserve so it is a good sale for bargain hunters.

Included are five Studio Remainders with pictures from the estates of five deceased artists including Plymouth artist Paul Gell (1918-1996), best known for his stunning flower paintings which met with huge success at Kew Gardens selling more than two million copies in print form. The sale contains 60 watercolours and oils, many based on the flowers of his garden overlooking Plymouth Sound, but some from his visits to Malaysia, China etc.

There are 76 lots from the late John C Riley (1938-2012), a Penzance-based graphic designer and artist. His colourful works include not only Westcountry harbours but, ancient Cornish barrows painted in a dramatic and abstract and colourful style. But the most outstanding paintings in his collection are the sporting action paintings including wind surfers, athletes, baseball players etc. Included is an acrylic on canvas of the fashionable man of the moment, rock star David Bowie.

The third studio is that of Laurence Roche (b1944) with 80 lots by this artist who was awarded an honorary membership by the Guild of Railway Artists in 2004 with his illustrations used in two of their publications.

The subjects that interested Laurence are those relating to abandoned railway buildings, signal boxes and engines etc much related to the Beeching era in the 1960s. Other interests include canals, collieries and docklands and his works were commissioned by McAlpines involved in the work on the Millennium Dome.

The remaining 180 lots are an eclectic mix with artists such as Marcel Mouly (1918-2008), Harold Dearden (1888-1969) and Westcountry artists Stanley H Gardiner, Julian Olsson and Joanne Pemberton-Longman.

Live on-line bidding is available on the day. The catalogue is published on-line at the-saleroom.com/whlane and ukauctioneers.com.
