Duchy firms celebrate Buy Local awards

Some of the top food and drink retailers in Cornwall have been recognised for their commitment to buying locally -sourced ingredients

The winners of the first Choose Cornish Awards were announced at an invitation-only event held at Heartlands, in Pool, West Cornwall.

The inaugural event was established by Cornwall Food and Drink to recognise the business and individuals in the county who have gone to the greatest lengths to 'buy local'.

Winners were chosen in four categories by a panel of esteemed judges including food writers and business specialists,

Cornwall Food & Drink founder Ruth Huxley said: "I was absolutely stunned by the quality of the entries for the Choose Cornish Awards, which demonstrated just how much can be done by and between businesses to drive real improvements in the value and effectiveness of our local economy.

"I know the most difficult job for the judges was picking the winners – a nice problem to have."

Winners included The Vine An Gwinbrenn, which claimed the Choose Cornish Every Day Award given to the retailer who champions local suppliers extensively.

The company has shops in Wadebridge and Bodmin and a mobile trailer for delivering to the heart of the community.

Boscastle Farm Shop and Café claimed the Truly Cornish Café Trail Award, which looked across the county for the café that offered exceptional service and locally-sourced ingredients to create interesting dishes

The Real Cornish Breakfast Award was won by Woodlands Country House Bed & Breakfast, where Hugo Woolley serves his guests a 100% Cornish breakfast which is both traditional and innovative.

The Best Business Collaboration was picked up by Trewithen Dairy. The business's collaborations run right through the supply chain, from the 28 Cornish farms who supply their milk to the larger processors who use their dairy products as ingredients.

The firm also collected the overall Champion of Champions Award for "bringing about a real change" in the county's relationship with local sourcing.
