A late-night reveller received a police caution after he stole a small fishing boat and took it for a trip around a harbour following a drinking session.

The 34-year-old man from Birmingham was apprehended by police after he climbed on board the vessel, which was moored at Sutton Harbour in Plymouth, Devon.

The man untied the ropes last night and allowed the boat to drift aimlessly around the small harbour, which is often home to million-pound yachts.

Police were called to the harbour around 11.40pm yesterday.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police and the Ministry of Defence Police attended in the MoD boat, boarded the stolen vessel and arrested the man, officers said.

The suspect was then detained at the city’s Charles Cross Police Station before being interviewed and cautioned for the offence of taking without consent.

A police spokesman said: “The man was obviously in drink at the time. There could’ve been much more serious consequences, so people have to behave responsibly.”
