Jess the spaniel is not so much a farm dog as a mother hen to the charges in her care.

At home in Devon, the caring canine shows everyone just how kind and gentle she is, especially when it comes to fluffy new chicks.

In fact, said owner Louise Moorhouse, Jess loves nothing better than wandering around the yard rescuing wandering animals and making sure they get home safely.

“Last year Jess found a little chick that had lost its mother hen,” said Louise.

“She picked it up in her mouth and brought it into the kitchen. The chick was covered in doggy spit but totally unharmed, proving how gentle Jess is with other animals.”

Jess made her TV debut last year in Martin Clune’s show Life With Dogs, where she was filmed feeding a lamb with a bottle of milk.

Louise said Jess just loved other animals.

“Jess mixes with lambs, sheep, calves, cattle and a multitude of chickens and ducks on the farm. I’d trust her with any animals.”
