Cyclist with no lights causes accident near Uffculme

Comments (0) AN ELDERLY motorist escaped serious injury when she swerved to avoid a cyclist on an unlit country road in Mid Devon. The woman was freed by the fire service after becoming trapped in her car which ended up nose first in a ditch which runs alongside the B3340 Uffculme last night.
Police say the driver lost control of the vehicle after swerving to avoid a young person who was cycling with no lights on the fast road, which runs between the village and Willand.
Officers have urged people to be more responsible when cycling at night and warn that having no lights can have fatal consequences.
PCSO Jonathan Sims said: "The accident happened at 5.20pm on the Uffculme Straight.
"The female driver of the BMW 3 Series, described as elderly, was taken to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital for treatment after complaining of injuries to her neck and back.
"The information we have is that a young cyclist was on a bike with no lighting which came out from the side of the road, causing the driver to swerve and go into a ditch on the side of the road.
"I have to say, I was down there the night before and if a cyclist hasn't got lights and a driver is in their car, they will not see them until the last minute – it is a fast road with a 60mph limit.
"We often notice people cycling along that stretch of road without lights which is an offence and a fixed penalty notice can be issued," he added. No other vehicles were involved in the incident which was attended by the ambulance and fire services, as well as three police cars. The road was closed for around 45 minutes.
